The ball valve uses a hollow, perforated and pivoted ball to control the flow through it. If the handle of the ball valve is parallel to the flow, the valve is open. When the handle of the valve is vertical, the ball valve is closed. Therefore, the ball valve status can be easily confirmed by checking the position of the ball valve handle.

Whenever you go shopping for foods like Cereals, biscuits, canned fruits and pastries, you may wonder how the food is processed. Here, ball valve plays an important role in the food and beverage industry. Whether it's cereal, cookies, canned fruit or pastry, everything on the shelf is either steamed, dehydrated, pasteurized and then packed into boxes, cans and bags.

Each process requires a wide range of valves, especially those used to manage the most critical steam in food processing. Since the safety of this supply has always been at risk, steam must be regulated, which is a challenge for valves and control systems.

Types of ball valves used in the food and beverage industry

One piece ball valves: - these types of ball valves are low cost, basically "disposable" ball valves. There is no leakage point in this kind of ball valve.

Two piece ball valves: - these types of ball valves are the most common. It has a joint that has less chance of leakage and can be maintained.

Three piece ball valves: - these types of ball valves can be easily disassembled for maintenance and internal parts can be easily replaced.

Sanitary Ball Valves for Beverage Processing

Sanitary valves are designed for use in applications requiring clean or sterile processing. In order for a valve to be considered sanitary it must NOT have crevices or cavities in order to keep bacteria from feeding and multiplying. The wetted surfaces (that contact the process media) must be polished and their radiuses must be of a minimum size to avoid any and all clinging or entrapment. Sanitary Ball valves provide tight shut-off and characteristic control.

There are many types of sanitary valves like globe, diaphragm, pinch, knife or butterfly, just to name a few. For the sake of beverage processing we would prefer to go with Sanitary ball valves for they have high rangeability due to the design of the regulating element, without the complications of side loads typical of butterfly or globe valves. While plastic, brass, and other materials are acceptable for use in sanitary applications, stainless steel is preferred by most. Some of the most common sanitary valve applications are used in dairy processing, brewing, and wine and spirits making.

How to use them

Ball valves for the food and beverage industry can be divided into two categories. The first is for direct contact with food, and the second is for utilities such as water and steam.

Although both valves are regulated, the first valve is strictly inspected because it is in direct contact with food. The smallest pollutants that are missing could damage the supply, leading to costly recalls.
